Governor Christie Shares Inspiring Bariatric Surgery Decision

This week New Jersey Governor Chris Christie shared his choice to undergo bariatric surgery. While the media had a bit of a heyday over a prominent political figure choosing weight loss surgery as a means to control his weight and improve his health, the reality is that obesity effects nearly 1 in 3 Americans and it does not take into account a person’s age, finances, gender, heritage, or profession. Oftentimes, for many of our CHRIAS patients bariatric surgery is the only viable solution to chronic obesity.

According to The Record, Christie shared with a Princeton audience that “The things that really got me down, the moments where I would say to myself, ‘Why can’t I beat this? Why can’t I do better?’, it would be when I’d be going out with Mary Pat on a Friday night or Saturday night. I’d be changing out of my professional clothes … and would go to casual clothes that I didn’t wear a lot, and then something wouldn’t fit.” Christie made the impressive choice to take his obesity in to his own hands, electing for Lap-Band surgery to help him shed his excess weight.

A growing list of celebrities, politicians, professional league coaches, doctors, and prominent business leaders have recently been sharing their experience with weight loss surgery, further proving that obesity affects people from all walks of life. To date gastric bypass, gastric-band, orgastric sleeve surgery is the most effective and long lasting method for controlling obesity. Most patients notice they will lose the majority of their weight within the first 12-18 months after surgery. After that time weight loss slows or your weight loss may level out.
