Did you know that Christiana Institute of Advanced Surgery is home to some of the top general surgeons in Delaware? At CHRIAS we often talk about bariatric surgeries at our Delaware surgery center, but we also offer additional surgery options for patients in need of general surgery as well. Our CHRIAS surgeons have years of extensive surgery experience and hold a number of board certifications in their specialty. If your doctor has suggested having general surgery, such as a hernia repair or cholecystectomy (gallbladder surgery), our center can provide you with excellent care and the most advanced surgical treatments.

What is General Surgery?
General surgery typically refers to surgery in the abdominal area, and commonly uses minimally-invasive techniques, such as laparoscopic surgery, to perform the procedure. Common general surgery types include:

  • Gallbladder, spleen, and colon surgeryMore common surgeries like gallbladder (cholecystectomy), spleen, and colon surgery have typically required “open” surgery which results in longer hospital stays and extended recovery times. When possible, CHRIAS surgeons remove or repair the organ through laparoscopic surgery, a minimally-invasive procedure that allows the patient to return to normal activities more quickly.
  • Anti-reflux surgery- Over 60 million Americans experience acid reflux at least once a week. Acid reflux is often attributed to a weak lower esophageal sphincter (LES). If the LES cannot close correctly, acid may escape from the stomach into the esophagus. Surgery is a very effective means for supporting a weak or damaged LES.
  • Hernia repair- Hernias are the result of weakened inside abdominal muscles that result in a bulge or tear in the abdominal wall. Hernias cannot correct themselves and require surgery to repair the hernia and to prevent severe pain.
  • Cancer surgery– Patients who have been diagnosed with cancer typically require surgery to remove the cancerous mass and will usually require additional treatments such as radiation or chemotherapy to successfully eradicate the cancer.

Depending on your need, our surgeons will work with you to determine if, and which, surgery will be best for you. To learn more about general surgeries performed at our Delaware surgery center, please contact us online or call us at 302-892-9900.
